10 Energy Saving Tips for This Winter

With winter comes high electricity bills. Home heating, clothes drying, water heating and extra lighting all add up over the three cooler months of the year.

It’s very easy to sit back and blame the rising electricity prices for the extra zero that appears on the bill, but in reality, there’s a lot of changes you can make around your home or investment property to reduce the costs of your power this winter.

Appliance Use

  1. Wash your clothes with cold water or a short cycle. Many washing detergents cater of cold water washes and still clean the dirtiest of clothes.
  2. Turn the heater off and the reverse air conditioner on. Don’t forget to switch it over to the warm setting, and you’ll be enjoying one of the most economical ways to warm your home.
  3. Get your hot water system check to ensure it’s only heating water to 60 degrees Celsius, anything above that is a waste of power in a general home situation.
  4. In South East Queensland, was have cold, dry winter and crisp blue skies which means it’s perfect weather to hang your clothes on the line instead of using the dryer. This could save you hundreds on your quarterly power bill.
  5. Adjust the temperature on the fridge, it doesn’t as cold during the winter. Anything below 4 degrees Celsius is a waste of energy.
  6. Turn off the spare fridge or freezer when you’re not using it

Save On Lighting

  1. Switch to energy efficient light bulbs, they cost more to purchase but the increased price is offset by low energy use.
  2. Switch it off. Turn off all lights when you leave the room

Save On Pool Costs

  1. Reduce the number of time the pool filter runs during the cooler months.
  2. If you haven’t already, switch your pool to Economy Tariff 33. This tariff could save your home up to 27 per cent on pool running costs.
