Stress-free Summer at Your Rental Home with These Simple Tips
When you’re renting a property, both you and your landlord have certain responsibilities.
As a tenant, you need to look after the place where you live, especially in summer. So here are some tips that will help you have a stress-free summer at home.
1. CHECKING AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS
Air conditioning units are often neglected but imagine how much dust and grime they accumulate if not maintained properly, especially since this is the season when we use it the most.
There are some things that you can do yourself like wiping off the dust from the blades of the fan or cleaning the aircon filters by following the safety and cleaning instructions. While you’re at it, check for any damage that needs to be reported to your property manager.
Keep in mind that some parts of air conditioning units have to be cleaned by professionals. For that, get in touch with your property manager and let them know about the condition of the unit.
2. POOL TO COOL
Chilling in a pool is one of the best activities in the summer heat, so if your rental property has a swimming pool, you’ll need to take care of it as well. Your rental agreement will outline if there are any special terms for swimming pool maintenance, which goes beyond just collecting leaves in the water.
If you’d like to put in a portable pool in your backyard, it will need to comply with the pool safety standards and regulations from your local council. One of the main requirements is that the pool area has to be guarded by barriers or fencing to make sure children can’t access the pool unattended. Check your local council for more information.
3. SAVING WATER
Even if there are no water restrictions in place, practising efficient water behaviours will help preserve water for the decreasing dam levels.
- Take shorter showers
- Install a water-efficient showerhead
- Use dishwasher and washing machine only when full, using economy cycle
- Sweep the driveway instead of hosing it down
4. EMERGENCY REPAIRS
If you have any emergency repairs, do you know who to contact? Have a look at your tenancy agreement to see who the nominated emergency contacts are and keep them close by.
