Got questions? We have answers

Does solar add value to your home?

This is one of the more surprising solar energy facts: installing solar power can increase the value of your property by around $6000 dollars per kilowatt of solar energy. This amounts to an increase of $29,000, or around 4.1% of the retail value of the home, for a 5kW solar inverter installation.

Solar energy in Australia is a rapidly growing sector, and a lot of it is due to these figures. The increases in property value greatly outweigh the initial solar panel cost, so it’s essentially a low risk, high return investment.

Will solar make my home more attractive to buyers or tenants?

Homeowners can access many benefits from using solar energy. Australia’s property market has shown that solar panels can help you sell your house 20% faster because of the lifestyle benefits, which include the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re living sustainably and offsetting greenhouse gas. Living in a house with solar panels also means lower utility bills, and being able to run air-conditioning in the hot (or cold) season without worrying about bill blowouts or the cost to the environment.

Does solar save money on your power bills?

Your solar energy system will usually pay for itself within 3–5 years, and you’ll save up to $60,000 in energy bills over the lifespan of your system (which is generally 20–30 years). Your specific savings do depend on the average sunlight in your area, but in sunny Queensland there’s not often a shortage of it. It also depends on the solar panel and solar panel inverter size, the solar panel efficiency, solar energy incentives, tariff rates, and whether or not you have a solar power battery, but in general, you can expect to see lower energy bills.

How much maintenance does solar need?

Solar energy systems and solar panels usually need little to no ongoing maintenance. It’s a good idea to have them checked every 5 years to keep them running optimally, otherwise there’s no need to do anything unless you’ve noticed problems like an increased power bill or alert lights on your inverter, or if you think there may have been damage from fallen branches or animals like possums. If you think the performance of your system might be affected by accumulation of road dust or other pollutants, you can clean them or access professional solar panel cleaning services.

Can I store solar power?

There are two ways to use the energy generated by your solar panels. You can connect your solar power so that any excess energy generated by your system is pushed back into the grid, where it’s measured and calculated (according to a feed-in tariff) and credited to your account. You will usually notice smaller bills straight away, or even end up with bills in credit.
If you install a solar power battery, the energy generated by your system is essentially stored in a solar power bank rather than pushed back into the grid. This system costs more to install, but they’re better for the environment, your home will be self-sustaining, and your solar panel battery will give you power even when there are blackouts.

How hard is it to install solar panels?

We don’t know about other solar suppliers, but with Coronis and Instyle Solar, the solar power installation process is simple, fast, and painless. Solar installation is definitely a job that’s best left to professionals and not DYI homeowners because of the high-voltage wiring required, but it’s fast and easy work for industry professionals with the experience that comes from installing 20,000 systems. Your professional installer will advise you on which solar panel is best for your property, and where they should be installed.

Does my roof need to be North-facing?

No. You could lose about 10–15% of your solar energy system production, which still makes the investment worthwhile. You might even gain from having East- or West-facing panels if your energy usage is heaviest in the morning or evening. If you’ve installed a solar power battery, you’ll have an even better chance of benefiting from your solar power system.

Is solar energy renewable?

Yes. Solar power in Australia is growing by the year because of our abundance of strong sunlight, enabling us to enjoy using all the energy we like without compromising the environment. Solar energy in Australia is easy to generate, which also yields massive financial and environmental savings that well outweigh the average solar panel cost.
